6 / Hayden Pass

Hayden Pass stands in Sangre de Cristo mountains of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 3.274m (10,741ft) and offers lots of breathtaking views. Its official name is Hayden Pass Road (County Road 6). The pass connects Coaldale on US-50 with Villa Grove on
US 285. High-clearance 4-wheel drive with low range is recommended. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs. The drive is steep, with grades up to 20%.
