Nature Park of Alvão is a protected area founded in 1983. It is the smallest of Portugal's nature parks, all of mountainous land, populated by approximately 700 locals. The area is characterized by a dichotomous geological region, between schist and granite rock types. The Upper Zone, in the east, is dominated by

granite formations where the Basal Zone, dominated by a Paleozoic Sedimentary Formation, situated in the eastern part of the park. The conditions of the park are defined by a temperate Atlantic climate, with Mediterranean characteristics. Oaks, hazels, holly, chestnuts, laurels, all forming mixed forests, trouts by the river, various bird populations including golden eagles, mammal populations, reptiles, define this park.
