The Minas da Queiriga, or Minas de Lagares, were used to extract ore, mainly tin oxide and tungsten. Having its high point in the 1940s, it had 500 workers at the time. Currently deactivated, the Vila Nova de Paiva City Council has converted it to a
tourist attraction. The excavation of the mines, unlike the usual one, was carried out by galleries supported by natural columns, left on purpose during the excavation, and therefore neither in the open nor in long caves and galleries.
