The Musandam is a governorate of Oman located on the Musandam Peninsula, which juts into the Strait of Hormuz. The governorate is accessible by land only from the United Arab Emirates. The rugged coastline of this unique peninsula resembles the glacier-carved coasts of polar regions. Land features include the

Western Hajar Mountains. Since these are the northernmost of the Hajar range, they and the peninsula are referred to as the Ruʾūs al-Jibāl (Arabic: رُؤُوْس ٱلْجِبَال‎, romanized: Heads of the Mountains). Wadis include that of Bih. The highest point in the UAE is located at Jebel Jais near Ras Al Khaimah, which measures 1,934m (6,345ft) from sea level, but since the peak is located on the Omani side, Jabal Yibir at 1,527m (0.949mi) has the highest peak in the UAE. During winter, the region can be fairly cool.
